Brighton’s Arty: Light fantastic
It’s difficult to do justice to the works of local artist Cecil Rice in words alone. Their astounding luminosity really has to be seen to be believed. Cecil loves painting coastal subjects in England, and also travels to Venice, the Mediterranean, India and North Africa for inspiration. He is fascinated by the mesmerising quality of direct sunlight on water, shoreline, buildings and landscape, and in recent years he has increasingly worked in oils. Says the artist: “A large canvas allows a feeling of space, freedom and some abstraction, as well as wonderful textures achieveable.” Light is key to Cecil’s preoccupation as a painter, and a full range of subjects can be seen in his book Cecil Rice – The Colour of Light (published by Halsgrove).
