Interview: Russell Kane

Award-winning comedian, novelist, YouTube sensation – Russell Kane talks literacy, fatherhood, unfulfilled ambitions and farts with Victoria Nangle

Hello Russell, how are you today?
Buzzing like a bee on a Berocca!

I like the title of your new show – ‘Right Man, Wrong Age’. How is it, do you think, that such a fuss has ended up being made about what your own age actually is?
In the end… my biggest discovery has been the maturity and age are not linked (farts and laughs).

Do you have a favourite age you remember being in your life so far – and what is it that makes you remember it so fondly?
30. Finally the adolescent screaming hormones began to chill out. At 35, they started again though…

You seem to be one of the busiest performers in comedy – touring, television, podcast appearances, YouTube videos, author – is there anything you’d like to do that you haven’t found the time for yet?
Porn. And opening a restaurant.

Finally the adolescent screaming hormones began to chill out. At 35, they started again though…

Your videos have had a phenomenal reception. I heard you say to Richard Herring that it takes you an hour to make each one, including editing. How important do you think it is to be techno-savvy as a comedian?
I never thought it before, but to be able to get one’s stand-up out there – directly. It’s been a game changer for me.

You’ve spoken a lot about your relationship with your father. Has he featured in your own decisions in how you want your relationship to develop with your own daughter?
Very much so. I’m trying to be a moaning old bellend.

An old crone comes up to you after a gig with a bag of shiny apples she says are for her step-daughter – very suspicious – and offers you three wishes. What do you wish for?
Apart from 10 wishes? I would wish for:
1) Very long life and happiness for me and my immediate family.
2) Lottery numbers
3) Global peace and prosperity

I enjoyed seeing you on TV encouraging literacy recently. What are you reading at the moment, and what book do you like to give to other people?
Currently reading ‘The Collected Ghost Stories of E. F. Benson’ – after Halloween. Madame Bovary is my favourite novel of all time.

Your date in Brighton is near the end of your tour. What are you looking forward to most about coming to our seaside home?
Just that room… it’s one of the best in the country. With 1700 people in it it’s magical.

And then it’s Christmas after the tour! Any idea what you’d like Santa to leave you under the tree?
A bottle of vodka and Lindsey. And some of her hot mates. And a hot tub. I’m kidding! Chill out…. Playstation VR.
