Andy Garth: Thanks for writing
It would be wrong of me to congratulate myself but I am so pleased for the number of responses I get from my column and this week alone I have had four people come in the shop and say, “I saw your write up in the Latest Homes Magazine and wondered if you would be interested in buying/selling this?”.
It may not sound loads but when you run a small specialist business like I do, these new clients are a pleasure to meet, twofold, more new and unique stuff to sell and the comforting knowledge that more than just me and a handful of others collect ‘Stuff’ on Brighton and Hove.
A Canadian guy bought me in a whole load of stuff including 1930’s maps, the plans for the Brighton Bypass and 3 great aerial photos measuring 3ft by 2ft (900 x 600) of Hove Seafront in about 1962/3.
The first photo shows the original houses that, although only built in the 20th century were knocked down during the 1960s and 1970s for the large blocks that now exist in Grand Avenue Hove. Can you imagine the uproar that occurred every time they wanted a new block? No wonder a planning officer’s life is tough?!
Although even in the 1960s it wasn’t a swimming pool but a small factory
The second photo is my topical material this week with a bird’s eye view of what the Medina Baths on Kings Esplanade looked like when it was still in one piece, although even in the 1960s it wasn’t a swimming pool but a small factory.
To see the bigger pictures!!!! Come and see me at the shop as I’m open Monday to Saturday in the run-up to Christmas.
