Pensioner campaigns council to change emergency shelter policy

The frost has already set in on the streets of Brighton, and for some of the city’s most vulnerable it is beginning to bite.

Campaigners are calling for Brighton and Hove Council to relax their emergency shelter policy for rough sleepers during cold weather.
The policy, under which the council provide emergency shelter for homeless people, currently only comes into effect after three nights of sub zero temperatures.

These calls come after two men died in Kent due to cold weather over Christmas, and charities have warned that more deaths could happen.

Yesterday, the Mayor of London announced that London would open their cold weather shelters, and directed people towards streetlink, a website which allows members of the public to find homeless people shelter.

Brighton council are yet to get back to us about their policy.

Michael Goodier has more.
