Andy Garth: Same place different decade
I am going to continue with my now, then and then again theme for the next few weeks… but will not provide the “then again” shot as – if you are like me – it’s too distressing to look at the architectural errors that have been made in the modern era to our town/city.
Both photos are taken from approximately the same position on the corner of North Street and West Street.
The first is in 1937/8 and shows the Regent Dance Hall entrance on the corner of Windsor Street and a view down North Street of which none of those buildings survive today until right at the very bottom of the picture the construction of what was the NatWest Bank and is now a bar/restaurant.
It’s too distressing to look at modern architectural errors
The second view is from the 1980s and is a great view of the building that was built as the Essoldo Theatre, constructed very shortly after the previous photo which in its final years became a Bingo hall.
It’s now a Sainsbury’s and I’m sure you will agree, inferior to its previous incarnations.
