Andy Garth: Knock it down
I believe that when architects and planners look at an old building with a view to developing it, they say: “it’s bound to look much better than what’s there at the moment”.
Hmm… unfortunately I reckon 50 per cent of the time they get it completely wrong!
First picture this week shows the fabulous building that existed before they built that lovely cement and glass horror that is now the Art College in Grand Parade, which when built also necessitated the demo of a church as well.

The second photo is not quite as bad in the scheme of things, but the huge Gothic style building dominated the skyline on one’s exit from Brighton Station in Queens Road. It now has a faceless block in its place which – sorry – doesn’t look better than what was there before!
Our first auction of the year is in March and we are looking for anything Brighton, Hove or Sussex that may be worth putting in the sale that may be lurking in the drawers or bookcases.
