Urinetown: The Musical
The plot of this impassioned but confusing Brechtian-style anti-capitalist musical involves a dark future world where toilets are privatised, with a star-crossed romance between idealistic rich girl (Ellie Earl) and working-class revolutionary (Ollie Wray). The singing is impressive: gospel song ‘Run Freedom Run’ is a highlight.
The costumes and makeup make the performers look like murderous Gothic dolls, while Katy Markey’s choreography unites exuberant would-be murderers through a whimsical Charleston. Director Louis Craig and musical director Gary Nock coax strong performances from the energetic young cast, yet for all the strengths of this production, the storyline of the show really doesn’t hang together.
