Andy Garth: I am not a geek

I did promise the auction results after last week’s rant, but due to timings this will have to wait till next week. In the meantime I have taken a picture of the inside of my shop, which gets more full every week, with this one being no exception.

As some of you know, I am the guardian of the photographic archive of the local daily newspaper The Argus.

Now I have probably 400,000 photographs and millions of negatives dating from 1929-1992 and last month I held a sale of original photos at The Grand Hotel which was covered by Latest TV and the BBC. During a five hour period, over 500 people visited… so due to popular demand I am holding a two-day sale and exhibition at the Grand Hotel again on Friday 9th (1-9pm) and Saturday 10th (10-6pm) June. All are welcome to come along and have an opportunity to buy all sorts of photos, from celebrities, events, and people taken in Brighton and Hove and surrounding areas.

Now the ‘geek’ title of this column comes about as it’s an event that is going to be as much about people’s interest in local history as other exhibitors’. It will include the following:

The Keep (Brighton, Hove and East Sussex Records facility)
Step Back in Time (Robert Jeeves, the postcard man)
The Dump Man (Films and photos of lost tunnels caves and other stuff in Sussex)
Kevin Newman (Local Author and Tour Guide)

The list will be bigger but going back to the ‘geek’ reference, there is a fab Facebook site called Brighton Past which has just under 30,000 followers which is my ultimate proof that I am not the only local history nut as it seems to be almost the norm.

Anyway, please come along, and if you need any further info please email me at Brightonandhovestuff@gmail.com
