Cardiac Comedy
Local business man Dave Blood has undergone a serious of major heart operations over the years and this has inspired him to run and annual comedy fund raiser for the British Heart Foundation. An accomplished stand-up himself he hosts the evening but, after a few well aimed gags and observations he leaves the evening to his stars, and stars they are. The opening set from Carl Donnelly was excellent, his material fresh, edgy and pointed, in that he pointed out the poor souls in the front seats – mercilessly. He was followed by local star Zoe Lyons, her act is now so finely tuned and her delivery so fast and slick that it’s hard to find time to really give full vent to your laughter, her observational skills are second to none and it’s easy to see why she is now such a popular choice for TV. Dan Evans came next, a wickedly weird set of spluttering invective, some directed once again at the poor guys in the front row. His material is perversely funny, dangerous even and it was good to be treated to comedy that had the audience teetering on the edge of acceptance and horror – loved it! Headlining was Hove star Simon Evans. Simon plays the part of middle aged, middle class husband and father with a delightful disregard for modern manners and political correctness – and so much of it rings that alarm bell of recognition through the audience – a tense, prickly humour that had us all roaring with laughter even when we recognised his jibes as personal traits. All in all a five star evening of comedy and fund raising.
