Simon Day: In Character
From his early days on the 90s comedy circuit as Tommy Cockles, Simon Day always shone as a brilliantly inventive comedian. He entered tonight as Billy Bleach, Fast Show pub bore extraordinaire; twenty years older and none the wiser, then for the next two hours delivered a masterclass in character comedy. His amateur poet performed expertly crafted, hilariously bad prose peppered with killer one-liners and a violent Charles Bronson-like career criminal out on licence delivered menacing, surreal vignettes. Day’s environmentalist prog rocker Brian Pern completed the quartet with reminiscences of out-charitying Bono and some great abstract observations. A celebratory performance.
