The Nutcracker Suite and The Snowman: With Live Orchestra

CBeebies presenter Pui Fan Lee’s narration of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker was perfectly soothing for young children. Southbank Sinfonia orchestra, conducted by Ben Palmer, added powerful musical depth to the stories somewhat sparse – but nonetheless beautifully illustrated – visual backdrop. Southbank Sinfonia brilliantly evoked the excitement, boldness and sometimes sadness of the Snowman animation in the second half of the show. The whirling violins, mellow piano and dreamy harp were superbly offset by crashing symbols and powerful brass instruments. The shows highlight was Raphael Bellamy Plaice’s flawless performance of Walking in the Air. The uplifting music complemented his soaring voice. We were captivated throughout this enchanting performance.
