Andy Garth: Interesting and Varied Lots

1

This week, although I am promoting our next Auction, I hope that the pictures and brief write ups interest you all generally. I would always be happy to take suggestions (obviously sensible ones) to fill a column with local facts, figures or photos.

The first picture is the front cover of the brochure for the opening of the SS Brighton Swimming Pool at the bottom of West Street Brighton from 1934, which was soon after converted into the Ice Rink. As you can see by the style, it also has many other great ‘deco’ style drawings inside.

The second photo is one of several rare and unusual postcards of Woodingdean and this is the Downs Hotel circa 1930 – and in fairness hasn’t changed an awful lot!

The final picture is of Max Miller emerging from a bookmakers in New England Road in Brighton with the owner Ernest Hayes. He had a few bookies across the town, and this is a one-off photo and a must for fans.

There are 300 lots in the sale which takes place Tuesday 27 March at St Leonard’s Church Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove, with doors opening at 6.30pm and the Auction starting at 8pm.

All lots are available to view at Step Back in Time, 36 Queens Road, Brighton, seven days a week.
