encore concert – BYO String Ensemble, Rachel Fryer (piano), Andrew Sherwood (conductor)

This talented ensemble of young musicians, each one effectively a soloist, gave a splendid concert before a dinner organised by the Kemp Town Society and ‘encore’, the fundraising network for supporters of the Brighton Youth Orchestra. Such events are essential now that funding for music in schools is so dangerously low. These young stars certainly demonstrate their worth, and they do it in style. Their varied and demanding programme included suites by Purcell and Glazunov, with some very sensitive partnering of Fryer’s evocative piano lead in Finzi’s wistful ‘Eclogue’. The future of music in Brighton is safe in their hands!
