A view from the rostrum: Records tumble again at Parsons Son & Basley’s Summer Auction

On a very warm morning at The Old Ship Hotel with standing room only, almost 200 people attended Parsons Son & Basley’s 997th auction to witness just under £4.2m worth of properties go under the hammer. Brexit, the hot weather and the World Cup could not get in the way of what was, to say the least, an extremely successful day says auctioneer Simon Caplin. “From the properties offered only one did not sell, which provided for a success rate of just over 93 per cent. With this figure added to the value of the properties sold, a truly outstanding achievement was recorded.” Simon continues; “3 Gardner Street, a freehold commercial investment, sold for in excess of 30 per cent above its guide amount. Whilst another freehold commercial investment in Terminus Road opposite Brighton Station, sold for almost 37 per cent above its own guide amount which really does reinforce the ever growing benefits of selling by auction – Brexit or no Brexit!” Not to be outdone were two single garages in Kemptown that sold for £79,000 and £48,000 respectively, whilst in Church Road Hove, an iconic unbroken mixed residential/commercial freehold sold for just under £1million.

… Which provided for a success rate of just over 93 per cent

Continuing with their initiative to support local charities, £250 was raised in addition to a further amount of £877 fundraised during the past year by the staff at Parsons Son & Basley’s Bognor office, for St Wilfrid’s Hospice who are based in Chichester. The charity lot was courtesy of ODT Solicitors in Brighton who very kindly donated the prize for the auction.

“As we approach the milestone of our 1,000th auction next year we have just had one of our most successful auctions in the history of the firm. Quite an achievement bearing in mind we have been auctioning properties for 192 years,” alluded Simon.
