My Mother Said I Never Should
Charlotte Keatley’s drama introduces us to four generations of women from the same family. The story moves through forty years, focusing on significant moments in their lives, almost all of which are disappointing to one or another.
Effective staging sets the scene; post-war Manchester complete with rubble, barbed wire fence and a tyre swing. Props and clever use of lighting help move the plot along.
The cast of four is also accomplished, giving the audience a glimpse into the expectations and disappointments of each character. Thankfully, the play ends with a glimmer of hope for the next generation.
