Fannytasticals: Cum Again
One thing that frustrates me about the Brighton Fringe is the amount of shows that call themselves Works in Progress. ‘Come help me make my show good for Edinburgh!’, is basically what we’re told. Are we Brighton folk mere guinea pigs, only worthy of half-baked material? Or perhaps I should see this more as empowerment, as we are tasked with deciding the fate of these trusting comedians’ jokes – with potentially drastic consequences. Oh, the responsibilities!
Whichever side of the fence you sit on – or maybe, you’re sitting firmly on it, having never thought about this before, and not likely to lose any sleep over it – ‘The Fannytasticals – Cum Again’ is anything but a work in progress. These five women know their stuff, and their comedy is brilliantly observed, over a number of (mostly X-rated) monologues, sketches and song parodies: STIs, periods, oral sex and fertilisation (or lack of) are just a few of the themes you can look forward to, so long as you leave your inhibitions at home. Don’t worry, though, there’s no audience participation. There were only a handful of men in the audience, but they laughed as loudly as we did, which was reassuring. One behind me probably learnt more in that hour than he ever did in biology classes, asking his girlfriend on a few occasions, ‘Is this really what happens…?’
Of course The Fannytasticals are going to Edinburgh for the Fringe, and unfortunately we can’t take any credit for the content of ‘Cum Again’ – nonetheless, I urge to you go see them. Just, don’t bring your children.
