YULETIDE! A TUDOR CHRISTMAS – Piva

Shawms, recorders, rauschpfeife of all shapes and sizes – the back of the platform was loaded with exotic, beautiful reproduction instruments. These were the stars of the show, set in the context of a Tudor Christmas and played in fascinating combinations by Piva – the Renaissance Collective. It was best when they were all sounding together with variations in the texture and ornamentation. Especially fine was David Jarratt-Knock’s virtuosity on the cornett. He really brought his instrument to life. Perhaps Piva’s style is more suited to interactive workshops in smaller venues, but then the bagpipes would likely be a bit too loud!
