Worthing elects first Labour Mayor since the 1930s

It’s a momentous day in Worthing as they announce, for the first time since the 1930s, that they have elected a Labour Mayor.

Henna Chowdhury, the first female Muslim Mayor of Worthing was elected on Friday 20th May, taking over from Conservative, Lionel Harman.

Cllr Chowdhury was elected in Gailsford Ward in 2019 and is also Tarring’s county councillor. She is a Community Interpreter at a school for Children with Special Needs and has interpreted at hospitals, for people using mental health services, social services and courts. She has also worked at the Progress Community Project recovery unit which helps residents adjust back into the community.

Henna has living in Worthing since 1986 and has raised three children there with her husband, Millad Chowdhury, who will be mayor’s consort. During her time, Mayor Chowdhury will support three charities: West Sussex Mind, Superstar Arts and Worthing Mencap.
