Hislop & Newman on Milligan

Latest’s Andrew Kay talks to Ian Hislop, best known for editing Private Eye and as a team captain on Have I Got News For You and his writing partner Nick Newman as their new play Spike heads out on a national tour which opens at the Theatre Royal Brighton on Tuesday the 11th of October.

Spike Milligan suffered all his life from mental health issues but whilst dealing with depression he also led the field in a new form of comedy that left behind the previous music hall and variety blend of mother in law jokes and sexist nonsense. Spike took nonsense to new levels writing the scripts for the Goon Show and paving the way for absurdists like Monty Python and Eddie Izzard.
