3 Places to Visit In The Northeast Of The UK
While London is a beautiful city, with over 30 million visitors per year, it is not the only place to visit in the UK.
One of the most underrated places to visit is actually the northeast, where there are a number of cities and counties that can both take your breath away and do it without feeling crowded – ahem, we’re looking at you, London.
And yes, it’s true, the further north you go in the UK, the heavier your luggage is going to be. It does get colder, and you will have to bring a few more coats and scarves, but this is completely worth it if you want to experience something a bit different.
With this in mind, here are the top three places to visit in the northeast of the UK and what you can get up to while you’re there:
Newcastle Upon Tyne
A day out can include travelling to Sage Gateshead – which is a gorgeous venue right by the river Tyne that almost looks like a sister to the Sydney Opera House – trying out some singing hinny, pan haggerty, craster kippers, and stottie cake – seriously, don’t ask – or picking up some Newcastle United tickets and travelling over to St James Park to experience a game.
Whatever you choose, make sure you experience the culture, meet as many Geordies as you can, and have a ball!
Edinburgh
This is an article about the UK, not just England, so we’re going to suggest you travel a little further and experience the best city in Scotland. Edinburgh is a magical place that is full of historical buildings, gorgeous greenery, and about a million pubs!
For people who want to feel like they’re walking into history, then this is certainly the city for you. It might get a little cold, but as we mentioned before, that chill is worth it just to experience what Edinburgh is all about. We’d even suggest that you go there in the winter when the Edinburgh Christmas market is up and running in Prince’s Street.
With countless stalls to visit, rides to have fun on, and beautiful lights glitzing up the city streets, it really becomes a fairyland like no other.
Aberdeen
Want to go even further north? Well, Aberdeen is the next best city that sits right at the top of the northeast coast. Like Edinburgh, there is a lot of history to this spot, and you don’t have to pay to get into a museum to see it – it’s all around you.
Unbeknownst to some, Aberdeen also has a glorious sandy coastline, with beaches that are as perfect for summer as they are in the south of the UK. A fun day out here can include having fun on the beach, experiencing some of that maritime history in the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, or simply delving into the history with a walking tour that takes you all the way through Old Aberdeen.
We reckon any one of these activities would be pretty fun, providing you wrap up warm, of course!
