Stonehenge at Stanmer? Local Woods A Potential Site of Neolithic Importance

Local resident, Richard Fulton, has walked in Stanmer woods for over 40 years and over the years he has noticed many features that he believes may be clues that there was a site of neolithic importance in the woods. Follow his trail as he shows Latest TV his finds, which include stones with ancient carvings that may have formed a large stone circle similar to a small Stonehenge. Richard is keen on archaeology but admits he is not an expert and would love to connect with people who may be able to shed more light on this intriguing part of Sussex. Richard has pieced together old maps and books detailing a few facts about this largely unknown stone circle.

  1. Andy Dalgleish says:

Fascinating videos. Thank you for putting me in touch with Richard. We met today. I concur with his theories. The stones were linked to water, the Moon and fertility. The stone with the eleven striations creating a spiral is unique. It was carved by humans before metal tools were created. How did a so-called hunter-gatherer society have the luxury and organisational infrastructure to create such things?

    • Sam says:

Been trying myself to get intouch with Richard but without success.
I carried out my own survey of Sussex Sarsens many years ago when I lived in the area. I never came across this carved stone though, which looks amazing.
Sarsen is a notoriously hard rock and very difficult to work, so to see one carved in this manner is unique.
There is another artificially shaped sarsen in Alfriston on the tye next to the church.
