Get Ready for a Scream! FilmPride Brings Queer Horror Shorts to Brighton This Halloween
October is officially here, and Brighton’s beloved LGBTQIA+ film festival, FilmPride, is gearing up to kick off spooky season with a frightfully fabulous night of cinema. On Friday 30th October, FilmPride presents Scream, Queens! A wickedly entertaining showcase of ten queer horror short films taking over The Actors on Prince’s Street from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Queer cinema and the horror genre have long shared a deep, symbiotic connection. From coded monster allegories to tales of subversion and survival, LGBTQIA+ filmmakers have historically embraced horror as a canvas to explore isolation, identity, and catharsis. Scream, Queens! leans into this rich tradition, offering a curated lineup that ranges from chilling body metamorphosis and haunting psychological thrillers to dark comedies and sci-fi camp.
A Bold & Diverse Selection of Short Films
The evening’s ten-film roster highlights independent queer talent from across the UK, Malta, and the US. Audiences can expect a thrilling blend of genres and styles:
Spooky Supernatural & Hauntings: In Jack Warren’s Papergirl (US), gender dysphoria manifests as a unsettling physical metamorphosis, while Richard Louprasong’s The Cruise (US) sees a couple venture into haunted woods on Halloween night only to confront a ghost from their past.
Psychological Thrills & Guilt: Amrita Acharia’s Sleepeater (UK) explores an eroding cycle of paranoia and guilt after a couple institutionalises a family member, while Susannah Farrugia’s Itch (Malta) delves into the inner turmoil of a novice nun struggling with her feelings for another.
Dark Comedies & High Concept: Alice Trueman’s The Cost Of Living (UK) reimagines Death as a irresistible femme fatale, and Aaron Immediato’s The Last Story on Earth (US) delivers an unforgettable finale featuring a drag queen fighting off an alien invasion trapped inside a library.
Rounding out the selection are The Monster Within Me (Dir: Kuba Marczuk), Son of God (Dir: Bruce Micallef Eynaud), Love Spell (Dir: Lauren Vevers), and Black Hole Barry (Dir: Alejandro Alberola).
Accessible & Inclusive Community Cinema
FilmPride is a volunteer-run festival dedicated to showcasing independent LGBTQIA+ voices worldwide. In line with their commitment to accessibility, all films screened during the event will feature captions.
Whether you’re dressing up in full Halloween costume or coming low-key, the event promises a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere celebrating the creative and cathartic power of queer horror.
