Bedroom Farce
Brighton Little Theatre do a grand job in bringing Alan Ayckbourn’s clever and sophisticated 70s comedy about marital disharmony amongst the middle class to shimmering life. The casting is perfect. The actors display an abundance of intelligence and insight in their beautifullyly judged performances (a prerequisite with Ayckbourn), deftly handling both the farcical and tragic elements of the play, which helps divert our attention from the occasional structural creak and crack. It may be farce; it may be absurd but the play still has to function within its own logical framework. The ending rather fizzles out, but this is Ayckbourn’s, and not the production’s fault – and it in no way spoils what is a darned good night out at the theatre.
