Low cost acupuncture in Brighton

Donna Smiley on holistic therapy at The Temple Acupuncture Clinic at Revitalise

Revitalise in Brighton is now offering a new concept in the form of a low cost multi-bed acupuncture clinic. The Temple Acupuncture Clinic at Revitalise is run by four acupuncturists who trained together at Brighton University. The therapists have set up their practice in order to offer acupuncture to people who might not be able to afford the expensive fees usually charged, which can be as much as £45 per session.

Acupuncture has become a popular treatment in the UK over the years, due to clinical research proving that the treatment can help a wide range of conditions. It is beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms, from specific conditions to general problems, such as lacking in energy and stress relief. Acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points.

I went along to the clinic to see exactly what a treatment involves. My acupuncturist Effie immediately put me at ease by explaining exactly what was going to happen at the session and what to expect. She started by giving me a thorough consultation, which included asking me questions about my health, diet, well-being and lifestyle. The consultation process is an important part of the treatment as it gives the therapist a good idea of the client’s health, medical history and any current problems which may need addressing.

“Effie then heated a few of the needles by burning the herb mugwort”

Effie gave me advice on my diet, which included advising me to cut down on the amount of wheat I was eating and to cut out Coca Cola. I was shocked when she told me that one can contains eight teaspoons of sugar. I made a mental note to throw out the rest in my fridge!

After the consultation I was asked to lie down while Effie inserted eight needles to several areas of my body. I had to take a deep breath in, when I breathed out she lightly tapped the needle in place. A couple of areas were tender, but none of the inserted needles hurt. After a few minutes I started to feel relaxed and calm. Effie then heated a few of the needles by burning the herb mugwort, this allows the flow of energy (Qi) to be further stimulated.

The needles are left in place for 30 minutes, Effie gave me a head, neck and shoulder massage during this time, which was fantastic. Before I knew it my treatment came to an end. I left the clinic feeling re-energised and the headache I had been suffering with for a few days had disappeared. I would definitely recommend people to try this acupuncture, especially at the low cost being offered.
Treatments are offered on Mondays, 12–4pm and Saturdays, 2–6pm. People are advised to book, but drop-ins are welcome. All are accredited by the British Acupuncture Council.
