The Lover and The Wife
There are three things you need for a successful play: a good script, a good script and a good script. Unfortunately, ‘The Lover and The Wife’ suffered fatally in this regard. The central premise had much to recommend it: the mistress and the wife form an allegiance against the husband and in doing so discover a love for each other. The script’s plethora of unanswered questions, leaden dialogue, weak characterisation and dramatic non sequiturs meant that it was impossible to engage with the drama, or feel anything for the two leads. Where was the conflict? A great idea squandered. You can make up your own mind as the play has another run from 17th-20th May.
