Trisha Brown Dance Company

In an evening of work that spanned 30 years it was the earlier material that most impressed. The gentle courtly dance of Les Jeux a L’àme gave much to enjoy and in this piece with music by Rameau we perhaps saw the company at their tightest, precision matched with a sense of prettiness. But it was in the 1991 work For M.G.: The Movie that most impressed with its soundscape that lurched from bleak to claustrophobic, punctuated by meandering piano both played and tuned. It was in this work that we saw how Brown’s work has influenced modern dance. Brilliant use of stillness, weaving of patterns in open space, repetition… all with incredible athleticism. Foray Foret was less entertaining, except for a great musical accompaniment from a local band who were given no moment on stage strangely. All in all a mixed evening where perhaps retrospection detracted from the whole.
