Futsal opportunity for youngsters

Kids aged 16 and 17 have been offered a chance to play Futsal and gain a Level 3 BTEC qualification with Albion in the Community.

Albion in the Community (AITC) is the charitable section of Brighton and Hove Albion and in 2011 helped more than 74,000 beneficiaries, directly helping 45,000.

The ‘Futsal & Education scholarship’ allows students to gain skills and qualifications relevant to the sport and leisure industry.

The young participants will be able to train and compete in a professional futsal environment to hone their skills.

Futsal co-ordinator Hayley Funnel said;

“I’m delighted we have confirmed a second year for the scholarship. The first 12 months were a total success and we’re looking forward to progressing and developing the course.”

Futsal, from the Portugese ‘futebol de salao’ (‘hall football’), has a history spanning over 80 years, originating in South America for those who had no access to football pitches.

Creativity, inspiration and technique are encouraged which often results in spectacular tricks and subtle skills being displayed.

It is no surprise then that former world stars such as Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo have embraced the only form of indoor football approved by footballs major governing bodies.

The first trials were held on Wednesday 3 April. For more information visit: http://www.albioninthecommunity.org.uk
