Richard Shayler: the Brighton Lights boys are throwing down the gauntlet

Field of honour

I’ve noticed a change in the city of Brighton and Hove recently. It looks different; sounds different. In fact, it even smells a bit different. New shops are coming to Churchill Square, interesting restaurants are opening up all around us, and to top it all I even saw a pop-up van dealing exclusively with oats opposite The Dome. Could this be the change I sense? No, it’s not that … although those oats do smell delicious. What is it? Aha! It’s students, of course! They’re back, and town is busier than ever!

Now, a lot of people have a negative view on students, saying they are lazy, they do no work and that they party. Now I, for one, agree with this view. But I don’t see this as a negative. We were all there once, and we’ll never be there again. So I say good cheer young squires! Make the most of it, be lazy! Watch daytime telly. Have yourself a flapjack from that new oat van, you know what they say … #YOLO!

Guy Lloyd and I have been spending a lot of time together recently, and I would go as far as to say that we’re starting to enjoy working with one another. Our relationship could be compared to that of two student flatmates, larking about. But unlike the students, we’re getting paid for it! You see, that’s the beauty of Brighton Lights, dear readers. It’s fun, enjoyable and entertaining. Without these characteristics, the shows would be stale and dull.

Whether we film in the studio or on location, we have fun. It relaxes our guests, allows the presenters to appear natural and warm, and allows for smooth running shoots.

We recently met the multi-talented Andrew Feest at his fencing club. Andrew is a sword-maker, set designer, master swordsman and an all-round top bloke. He took Guy through the basics of wielding a massive sword; it was truly impressive. It all went to Guy’s head though, and he started quoting Shakespeare and challenging everyone there to a duel. It got very uncomfortable when they asked Guy to give them back the swords and armour at the end of the session. We then went to Andrew’s house and he took us through how to actually make a sword. Amazing, it truly was. His garden shed would be the envy of every dad in the country; you don’t want to miss that VT.

We’ve filmed all this, and plenty more besides. October is going to be a highly enjoyable month for video inserts in Brighton Lights. Do please join us every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7pm, on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin Media Channel 159. We are also now streaming our channel 24/7, live online, at thelatest.tv. You got that, Guy? 7pm? Yes? Er, Guy? Where did you get that sword from? No Guy! Put it down!

“You sir, I challenge thee to a duel!” Oh no, not this again …
