Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Martin Roscoe (piano) Andrew Gourlay (conductor)

The New Year began brilliantly with a veteran soloist and a charismatic young conductor. Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1 is a very dramatic work, inspired by the tragic death of Robert Schumann. However, this impassioned performance also found its lyrical beauties and deeper, tender emotions. The audience responded with thunderous applause.

Beethoven’s 7th Symphony made a pleasant contrast. Bright and uplifting, it seemed almost Spring-like. Even the sombre-starting Allegretto quickly picked up to re-establish the joyful mood. Finally it all bubbled over in the thrilling, manic race of the last movement, conductor and orchestra revelling in their speed, accuracy and excitement.
