This week’s headlines from across the city

EYE MILESTONE
The construction of the Brighton i360 reached a major turning point this week after a 25 metre high pile rig arrived on site at Brighton Beach.
The 52-tonne rig will be used to put 10 to 20 metre long piles in the beach. This will then create a wall to hold back the shingle to make space for the foundations of the observation tower.
The attraction is expected to open next summer.

NORTHERN LIGHTS OUT?

It’s long been a popular watering hole for those seeking something a little different. But Brighton’s Scandinavian bar Northern Lights is in hot water. That’s after officials claimed they were breaching licensing laws.
The complaint, which will be discussed by councillors this week, says that there’s too much ‘vertical drinking’ that goes on in a pub which is supposed to be largely food led.
But those at the bar have questioned the report, adding they had been largely trouble free seven years since opening.

HOSPITAL VISIT
Health secretary Jeremy Hunt was the latest high-profile politician to visit the city.
His trip to the Royal Sussex County Hospital was designed to boost the campaign of Brighton Kemptown’s Conservative MP Simon Kirby as he looks to defend his seat. But it also marked backing of the £420 million plans to bring the hospital into the 21st Century.
And Latest TV was down there to capture it all on camera.

VILLAGE PLEA
For years it has been overlooked as investment poured into its seaside neighbours. But it appears the people of Lancing have had enough of Shoreham and Worthing taking all the limelight.
A recent meeting in the village has led to local shops calling for a redesign of parking and other facilities in the high street.
Traders hope that simple changes will make a massive difference to the area, which is currently dominated by charity shops.

WAGE CLAIM
A Hove nursery has hit back at government officials. That’s after minsters named and shamed them for not paying the minimum wage.
But staff at the nursery just off Palmeira Square told Latest TV they had made an honest mistake. And instead they said it was up to officials to double check their facts before making such bold claims.

ON THE RISE
Hundreds of people are turning to food banks in our city. That’s the view of volunteers who are behind the groups.
With the numbers now increasing from two to 13 in little over a year, it’s clear there’s an issue in the city which is not being addressed properly.
As another food bank opened in Hove serving those who are hard-up in Hangleton, this was certainly backed up by those either helping or being helped.

SEAGULLS ON THE UP
It’s been a good few weeks for the Albion. Since Chris Hughton came in as the Seagulls’ manager, the boys in blue and white have slowly dragged themselves away from the dropzone.
And in the latest press conference, Hughton said he was delighted with the way the team was responding to him.
Latest TV is down at the press conference every week – so don’t forget to check out www.thelatest.tv to see catch all the latest news from the Albion and elsewhere.
