The End of The Affair

Graham Greene’s celebrated novel is transferred to the stage, and a tricky undertaking that proves to be. It tells the story of a very middle-class love affair running through WWII. The cast all try terribly, terribly hard not to hurt one another and the stage is littered with torn up letters that the characters simply can’t bear to read. With religious symbolism everywhere, it works on many layers but I need to focus on its entertainment value. The story is told through a series of confusing flashbacks (which don’t really work on stage) and expositional soliloquies that will not be everyone’s cup of tea.
