And Then There Were None

The Theatre Royal Brighton makes a perfect home for a classic whodunnit, and they do not come any more classic than Agatha Christie’s perhaps most famous work. Whilst not the most cutting edge, exciting or thought provoking kind of theatre one has to admit that it is thoroughly entertaining, from the splendid set and costumes to the quite frankly “period” performances. How refreshing to see something in such an unadulterated form, mannered, delivered with period accent and phrasing and all the better for it. First published in 1939, under a title no longer acceptable, this is surely Christie’s masterpiece and the complex plot certainly has stood the test of time. With good performances throughout, although one cast member does seem to project far more than the confines of the theatre require, this is a fun night of traditional theatre that reminds us that there is little wrong with simply being entertained – hats off to that.
