London Philharmonic Orchestra, Robin Ticciati (conductor), Louis Schwizgebel (piano)

The light, quick movements of Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande were brightly played and created a poignant contrasting mood with the minute’s silence at the end, to honour the dead of the recent tragedy in Paris. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major was a thrilling highlight of the evening, Louis Schwizgebel impressively capturing both the sublime melancholy of the second movement (along with beautiful flute playing from Sue Thomas) and the joviality of the first and third. La mer by Debussy didn’t reach the calamitous peaks of the Ravel and occasionally lacked clarity and definition, but happily reached a striking, thunderous finale.
