The Tempest
Shakespeare’s last play is possibly one of his lesser-known pieces, and this Emporium/D.A.F.T. co-production, with its impressive vocal harmonies and dance set pieces, manages to broaden the horizons of the original work. Noteworthy performances by Rory McDermott as the tormented Caliban and Conor Baum as Ferdinand/Sebastian stood out, as did Peta Taylor’s eco-waste flotsam and jetsam design. But all the cast had their moments including the two clowns, Stephano (Polly Swinscoe) and Trinculo (Scott Roberts) and Miranda (Sophia Carr-Gomm). Over all this minimalist approach, with impressive audio-visuals, is extremely accessible and entertaining.

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Any of these phrases ring bells?: “O brave new world…Our revels now are ended…We are such stuff as dreams are made on…Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.” It’s not his last play.
You mentioned all the cast except the lead, the excellent Seth Morgan who played Prospero. Miranda is not a clown.
Good review otherwise. 🙂
