Timothy Ridout (viola) John Reid (piano)

Cinderella of the Strings, the viola was nonetheless favoured by Bach, Mozart and Schubert. In Ridout’s masterly hands it sings out more tenderly than any other instrument. Sensitively supported by Reid, he held the capacity audience in silent awe. There wasn’t even any coughing between the movements!

Two romantic masterpieces, Schumann’s wistful Fantasiestücke Op73 and Brahms’ late work the E flat Major Sonata Op.120 No2, presented a wide range of expression, from nostalgic to fiery. ‘Urizen’ by John Hawkins (1983), inspired by William Blake’s demon, made a thrilling centrepiece to this engaging programme, which ended with a perfect Bach Andante.
