Now and then: Andy Garth looks at posters – old and new

1-2-garthy

By the time you read this, I hope to have acquired the James Brown poster, as shown below. I was actually there at the gig and still can’t believe that in 1981 the Godfather Of Soul appeared at the Top Rank Suite on West Street Brighton. It was amazing and the memory is which has led me to want this piece of Brighton music memorabilia.

Now the second poster is a copy which I sell regularly in the shop, and is a 1964 Rolling Stones gig at Brighton’s Hippodrome. What I love most is the fact that in those days you got a full evening’s show with various other musical acts, making it at 12/6 (67p in new money) an absolute bargain. It just goes to show what a great demand there is for music ephemera.

What a great demand there is for music ephemera

I do have clients searching for this exact type of stuff, with the Beatles 1964 Hippodrome gig being a top want, and Springsteen’s 1981 Brighton Centre show being another.
Next week there will be news about our last auction of the year.
