BREMF – Orpheus Caledonius

Refined early Baroque consort L’Avventura London and Old Blind Dogs, an earthy Scottish trad. band, with folk soprano Siobhan Miller and BREMF Community Choir may usually play to very different audiences but this evening brought them together. The music came from William Thomson’s seminal work ‘Orpheus Caledonius’ (1725) that inspired that century’s best composers. It took a while for my ears to adjust as the harpsichord developed those seductive Scottish airs to match the elegance of the Georgian building. Enjoyment was all in the tunes and sur-titles wouldn’t have helped as we couldn’t have understood the saucy broad brogue anyway.

CODA: Special congratulations to Mark and the crew of Pitch Black Lighting for fixing the rattle in the amplification so promptly.
