The endearingly daft ex-Bonzo and extended Python member entertained a very responsive audience with a career-spanning show that demonstrated his musical dexterity and skilful wordplay. There were fond reminiscences of mischief maker Vivian Stanshall and we were treated to songs from Monty Python’s Holy Grail, which we learned was Elvis’s favourite film. With guest duo Rag Mama Rag, Innes previewed several new, and excellent, Country Blues songs and a spot-on Ry Cooder cover before delivering a crowd-pleasing selection of cabaret-style Rutles favourites. There was no big showstopper finish but the 1920s ukelele ballad was a beautiful end to the evening.
