Tony: the Tony Blair rock opera

Over the last decade, producers have taken the safe route for new musicals by choosing titles that relate to films, books, popular artists, and Disney titles-think Harry Potter, Jersey boys, Tina, Hamilton, Heathers-the list is long so, when offered the chance to view Tony Blair the rock opera (unlikely subject) my first thought was “ please don’t let it be another Bernadette!”
How wrong was I!
This show is an explosion of energy, silliness, talent and, in a strange way, education. If you can remember those times and the politics around them, then you will appreciate the satirical approach taken by Hill. If you are too young or have no interest in politics at all, then you will come out with more knowledge than when you went in at the start.
Written by Harry Hill with music and lyrics by Steve Brown, it has the mad comedy you would expect from Hill and a cracking score from Brown. Excellent tracks are supplemented by a strong onstage trio led by MD Tara Litvack who looks too young to be out at night!l
Casting Director Debbie O’Brian has put together a superb cast,  a true ensemble group,  who all shine in multi roles and sing up a storm. Although unfair to single anyone out, Jack Whittle as Tony Blair and Howard Samuels as Peter Mandelson are worth the ticket price alone.
Lastly a thumbs up to director Peter Rowe. A veteran of many Rock and roll shows and pantos, he has brought clarity and detail to the overall chaos.
Go-you’ll have a great night!
