Southern Water reaches meter milestone

Southern Water has successfully installed 250,000 new water meters under a new programme and the milestone customer helps with the celebrations

Tina Wilson, from Brighton, was granted numerous water efficiency products after becoming the 250,000th customer to have a meter installed.

The landmark celebration follows on from the installation scheme across Brighton & Hove, west to east, which aims to have 74,000 new meters installed by next October.

According to Southern Water, people who use a meter tend to use ten percent less water, therefore 92% of customers will be offered the installation.

Customer Service Teams will deliver information packs to customers before the meters are installed so to give them information regarding the benefits of the product.

During installation meters will usually be placed in pavements outside homes which will please those who wish to avoid the meters being on display.

Work began in the region during November and this has resulted in 70% of all Southern Water customers owning a meter, a huge rise from 40% at the start of 2010.

Darren Bentham, Chief Customer Officer for Southern Water, said: “As well as installing 250,000 new meters, we have also provided customers with information and practical advice on saving water, energy and money, and introduced new tariffs to ensure that water remains affordable for all customers and to give people time to adapt to metered charges.”

An estimated 15 million litres of water is saved everyday by the meters and plans are to have 500,000 installed by 2015, with the aim of saving 30 million litres a day, enough to satisfy the needs of 200,000 people.

Teams will install street by street and give customers the chance to speak face-to-face to staff and ask questions and receive advice.
