Hot in the shade

Latest Interiors finds beautiful awnings to protect you from the elements

The only predictable thing about the British summer is its unpredictability. One minute we’re in the middle of a monsoon, the next we’re sweltering on the beach in record high temperatures. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could spend more of our summer out of doors, whatever the weather? Well, an awning might be the answer, and here’s why…

Stay out of the sun…

If the weather is good, and you want to create a shady space to eat, drink or play, there are a number of ways to provide good quality sun protection. Shade sails – sail-shaped canopies that can be suspended across outdoor space from walls, trees or fences – are versatile, contemporary, and look fabulous. Shade sails are relatively easy to position, and can be strung across a garden or from a sunny wall to create instant shelter.
If you’re after something more permanent, consider an awning or canopy: generally fixed to a wall, awnings and canopies can help to create a sheltered verandah-style space. High-end awnings can also include under-mounted lighting, heating, wind and sun sensors – and are operated by remote control. They’re a great way of adding colour to your garden, too.
Another option is an outdoor ‘living pod’ – an all-year-round pergola, with adjustable roof. These pods can be lean-to or free-standing, and come with either venetian blind-style rotating louvred roof, or retractable fabric roof, creating a weatherproof space for enjoying the great outdoors.

…and rain

Of course, whatever protects us from the sun can also be handy in a downpour. All of the fixtures and structures above can keep out the rain, as well as the sun, protecting dinner parties, drinks, and children’s play areas. Installing a shade sail, awning, canopy or permanent structure will help you and your family to make the very best of outdoor space all year round, even in a summer like this one.
