Dowds dips in the deep end for charity

Each year since 2011 Tom Dowds has successfully set himself a challenge to raise money.

In 2011, he ran the Brighton Marathon, in 2012 he cycled to Paris, and in 2013 he cycled to Paris and back.

This year is his biggest challenge to date: swimming one mile, running the Brighton Marathon, and then cycling from Brighton to Paris and back!

Tom says: “Have you ever thought to yourself, “This year I really must get out and participate in the various fund raising activities that are held each year,” and then you think, “Oh no, that sounds like hard work!”

“Well, with a band of able helpers (John Smutts, Martyn White, and Matt Gray) I am willing to do that hard work on your behalf!”

The swimming challenge commences on Saturday 5th April, followed by the Marathon on Sunday 6th April.

On Monday 7th to Friday 11th April he will cycle to Paris and back.

It is quite a challenge, but all for two good causes!

This year, City College is raising funds for the Rocking Horse Appeal which aims to fund support services for teenagers, like our students, who need treatment at the Royal Alexander Children’s Hospital.

He is also continuing to complete his dream of building a training centre in Nakuru, Kenya, where street children can learn a trade and help their community, as well as themselves.

Below are links which show the successful projects over the past four years, which include building and refurbishing classrooms, building and equipping kitchens for schools and orphanages in Nakuru.

Each year students from City College in Brighton raise their own money to travel and work on these projects. To date, 31 students have been involved and have had an adventure of a lifetime!
