Alexander Karpeyev (piano)

Only the fool-hardy or brilliant would start with Schumann’s ‘Concerto without Orchestra’, an ardent, ambitiously extended work. This impressive performance was just the warm-up for a truly brilliant recital.

Karpeyev makes an excellent champion for the work of Nikolai Medtner. The two ‘Skazki’ (folk-tales) were enchanting, wonderful showpieces. They can go straight on my playlist.

Next came Busoni’s astonishing Carmen Fantasie Sonatina. Karpeyev’s prodigious technique picked out Bizet’s much-loved tunes clearly from all the extraordinary virtuoso flourishes. Even more amazing was Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’, with such contrasting elements as the furious ‘Infernal Dance’, the exquisitely gentle ‘Lullaby’ and the monumental ‘Finale’ themes. Karpeyev delivered both power and delicate subtleties of dynamics and pace throughout his taxing programme. What style, what stamina!
