Interview: Piff The Magic Dragon

The bad-tempered comic magician talks to Victoria Nangle about Vegas and more

FingerGun
So – congratulations on your intentional success on America’s Got Talent (2015 finalist). How has life changed since the crowd went wild for you then?
It’s been unbelievable. Mr Piffles and I went from nobodies to overnight success. It’s safe to see we are now the most famous Magic Dragon / Chihuahua Act in America. Since the show we’ve been on the road every week selling out theatres, casinos and comedy clubs. One club we did 12 shows in a week just to keep up with demand. Each Monday – Wednesday we have our show at the iconic Flamingo of Las Vegas, and I think it’s safe to say I’m the first English Magic Dragon to headline a show on the strip.

You’ve been playing to Las Vegas. How are the crowds different there to the rest of America?
Las Vegas is a very special place because the crowds come from all over the world. So although there is a strong American contingent, every night there are fans in from Canada, England, Scotland, Australia and even further afield. Like Wales.

Any tips to Tapeface (aka Boy With Tape On His Face), after his smash hit at AGT this year?
He’s a good friend of the Piff crew. We’ve been talking about it ever since he thought about auditioning. He’s going to do great.

Any tips for anyone looking to win in Vegas?

Don’t gamble! The house always wins. There’s a reason the casinos are so fancy.

You’ve blown the socks off Penn & Teller (Fool Us), and supported Mumford & Sons. Impressively diverse. Who would you still hanker to share a bill with?
Britney. She performs across the street. The Original Princess.

Any celebrities Mr Piffles had an especial reaction to? I understand Simon Cowell particularly likes small dogs…
Shania Twain’s horse. Seriously. She had one in her show and Mr Piffles didn’t like it. He started a bark off during ‘Still the One’, and got escorted out.

Everyone knows magic exists. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

Free snacks for everyone!!

What trick would you most like to pull off, if logistics, physics and reality were no obstacle?

The old Princesses and Gold out of nowhere trick.

Who do you admire and why?
I have no idea what you are talking about. I’m a genuine magic dragon. Therefore I’m naked.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?
Tour tour tour. And keep working in Las Vegas. And Open PiffLand.

What are your plans for the next 12 minutes?
McDonald’s Drive Thru. Living the dream!
