Jake Shears

Jake Shears is the consummate performer. And we love him for it. And he loves us for loving him for it.

The former Scissor Sisters frontman bounded onto stage fully kitted out as the ringmaster he proved to be, performing delightedly to his Brighton crowd – even stealthily walking among his people while belting out ‘Take Your Mama Out’ in one of the golden ‘Scissor’ oldies he drops into the set. These familiar songs, although appreciated, remarkably highlighted just how much Jake has returned to his classic songwriting form for his solo debut (released last Friday). Here is the “funk train” to board with him and his band (most notably writing partner Mr Morgan) showcasing Jake’s recognisable vocal range, from falsetto to rich twangy tenor, with properly enjoyably baselines, decadent sax and skilful guitar forming the core sound. The Elton John-esque 70s stomping influences and 80s electronica muses are solidly in evidence, with Shear’s sharp, sassy and poignant lyrics set atop.

As the set progressed Shears was a barrel of energy, later admitting to nearly passing out. I caught myself wishing I might see him play ‘Cabaret”s MC one day, only to realise that that was exactly what we were witnessing – but instead of John Kander’s familiar Berlin tunes, here was sharp-eyed, PG-kinky, owner-of-his-own-fetishisation Shears playing MC in the musical of his own writing, with his muscular moves and audience captivation all him. One of the best music gigs I have ever witnessed. I thank you Mr Shears.
