Our Magazine Heritage
A Brief History
The Punter which later became The Latest started in Autumn 1984 and featured Brighton LGBT theatre/band Siren, Simon Fanshawe, reggae band Black Roots, playwright Caryl “Top Girls “ Churchill, the birth of the seafront Zap Club with Poison Girls and The Piranhas and The Wild Wigglers. The Escape Club ( now Patterns) had The Fall and New Model Army and there were ads from The Brighton Centre and The Richmond, and do you remember other advertisers like Red Rat, Urban Renewal, Food For Thought. The Works, Simple Supplies or Decades.
It was largely written by hand ( no computers or mobile phones then – how did we survive!!! ) in The Volunteer on Church Street (now The Mash Tun) by a motley band of friends including John Paul Jones, the late Tony Miller, and current Latest editor Bill Smith. It was fun! It was pretty diverse then and carried on in that Live and Let Live tradition through the decades morphing into The Latest and Latest 7 and Latest Homes and now Latest Brighton. – Bill Smith
