Film: Jessica Kellgren-Hayes

the creative generation

Calling all students! This is a student announcement! (Please now imagine I am standing atop a soap box or similar holding a megaphone). Are you a budding filmmaker? Have you been making films since before you knew how to text properly? Do you have a filmography as long as Mickey Rooney? … If you just had to Google him, then we’re going to need to have a talk. Equally, did you only last year start recording films? Are you an animator who has only very recently put your designs to motion? Well, I’m interested in hearing from you as well!

“We are the generation that has grown up with the ability to make films at our fingertips”

On 22 March, FilmFest will be screening a very special episode dedicated to films from students. Submit your film/s by 8 March for a chance to be involved.

We are the generation that has grown up with the ability to make films at our fingertips; our phones all have a camera, and easy editing software is available for free on various app platforms. I am not in any way saying that every video clip out there is an artistic marvel; it would take over 1,000 years to watch every video currently on YouTube – how many gems can there be?! But I know from experience that talented filmmakers are often overlooked due to their age, or lack of qualifications or experience.

You don’t have to be in film school or even studying a film-related course, and there is no age limit, so mature students can also get involved. All I ask is that you are currently in education, over the age of 16 and that the film is 12 minutes or under. The films we are looking at can be surrealist masterpieces or tell a narrative sweetly and succinctly in just a few minutes.

Send an email with the title, running time, synopsis and a link to the film online (that can be to an unlisted YouTube video, you don’t have to put it out there for the world to see) to Jessica@thelatest.tv
TV is a great way of gaining exposure for your work: in the UK, the number of views for feature films on television is twenty two times higher than the number of cinema tickets sold! Most filmmakers start out making short films as shorts are a great way to explore one’s creativity and develop a style. Your film doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be made with a huge budget; we want to see your creativity and style. I look forward to watching your film!
