Jake – About a Boy: Darkness at the end of the tunnel

So that time of year is back again. Your morning alarm can barely conceal its relish as it ruthlessly jolts you out of your comatose nirvana. There must be some mistake… it’s still dark.

No mistake my friend. The darkness is back. Already. This is your life until March. It really is beyond my descriptive power to convey how horrible and unnatural it is to wake up in darkness. To travel on creaking public transport services in darkness. To leave work in darkness.

All the while silly listicles appear online entitled “10 things successful people do in the morning”, chief among which is usually waking up at 3:45 am because, according to Rex Narcissus, CEO of Whocarescorp: “Things just appear so much clearer at that time of day.” I’m delighted for you, Rex. But not everyone can be CEO of a corporation.

Unfortunately in this country, normal is being paid slightly less than your cost of living and being sad on dark trains. That’s clearly really dumb.
I don’t know what the solution is, but it’s definitely not this. One day someone will have an idea that will make us kick ourselves for not thinking of it sooner – we were probably too tired. Whatever it is, I cannot wait.
