Boosting our immune systems
Pumpkins, falling leaves, apple bobbing…all these things invoke October and the change in season. There’s a chill in the air at the start and end of each day and we reach for extra layers of clothing to fend it off. Farewell to summer, perhaps, but for me it’s definitely welcome to autumn too for it brings its own delights with its crisp morning feel and the promise of gold, rust and auburn hues.

Changes in season often have noticeable effects on the body. The colder weather and shorter hours of daylight can make us feel a bit down and out of sorts. Sunlight is a basic requirement for a healthy body as it regulates our biorhythms, contributes to longevity and is our best source of vitamin D, so shorter daylight hours naturally have an effect on our absorption.
Likewise, cooler temperatures are unlikely to beckon us outdoors so often and, as we turn more towards the couch potato lifestyle, our immune systems can get a bit lethargic and more susceptible than usual to viruses and bacteria that trigger illness.

Self-help
There are several simple things we can do for ourselves to help restore the balance of our bodies. Eating more fruit and veg, exercising regularly, meditating and adopting a regular sleep pattern are a few. Pukka also produces a fantastic organic bio-nutrient supplement called Vitalise, which we stock and have had good feedback from clients.

Benefits of massage
A single professional Swedish massage, according to research by Cedars-Sinai (2008), can neutralise harmful hormones and boost the immune system. Feel-good hormones like dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin are increased while the stress-inducing and immune-suppressing ones are reduced. Add the power of touch into the equation – and maybe therapeutic aromatherapy oils – and it’s just got to have a positive effect on your body.

For even greater benefits, we recommend a course of massage treatments. Our therapists will be happy to advise which of our range of massages best suits your needs and what you hope to achieve health-wise. I also personally recommend our Reflexology and Muladhara (root chakra) treatments for the immune system.

So treating yourself to a massage this month might be just what’s needed for your health and wellbeing and what a fantastic excuse for pampering yourself! You get to experience a blissful treatment and emerge feeling ready to ward off whatever health challenges the season may hurl your way.
